Announcement/Special Issue of the Cybernetic Guacamaya CETLALIC announces the creation of the CILAC Freire Project
Dear friends, colleagues, former students and close contacts of CETLALIC: We hope you are well and that your lives and activities are also going as well as possible. We are writing to you again to thank you all for the support you have given us over these 28 plus years of existence and constant struggle to keep this project going. Without each and everyone one of you it would have been very difficult to endure. We are continuing the battle and also becoming stronger. This time we want to share with you the creation of the new CILAC FREIRE Project (Paulo Freire International Center for Language, Art and Culture) recently created in Cuernavaca. CILAC Freire is a sister project which will carry out various activities in the areas described by its full name. In addition to teaching Spanish to foreigners, CILAC Freire will organize classes in other languages (English, French, Nahuatl and others if possible) for the Mexican community using the Paulo Freire methodology to practice these language. This is aimed at fostering exchange between Spanish language students and the local community. The project will also support and foster artistic activities by Mexican individuals and groups in our community using our facilities as meeting spaces among those interested in doing this. Art will be another tool with which to share the flavor and knowledge of Mexican reality and what happens outside of our locality. When foreign artists are here, workshops or talks will be held to exchange experiences. In addition, as CETLALIC has been doing, CILAC Freire will continue to support various independent organizations that are struggling to meet some of the social, political and economic needs of vulnerable groups, as well as problems related to domestic violence, street violence, exploitation, marginalization, and others. We will help them in their efforts to raise funds and obtain material and we will make others aware of their fight and organizing to solve their problems, and most of all, their example as fighters and resisters against the neoliberal and globalizing model that wants to do away with us. Lastly, CILAC Freire and CETLALIC will work together to promote and disseminate the Mexican and Latin American cultures, and any culture that seeks to regain and maintain universal human values of respect, tolerance, solidarity, fellowship, inclusion, dignity and acceptance of all types of persons regardless of age, color, race, sexual orientation, religion, origin, class and many more differences that enable us to fulfill the Zapatista ideal of creating a World with Space for Many Worlds. CILAC Freire faces a very large challenge in gaining its place in our national and international community, but we have no doubt as to their ability and we wish them all the best in these first steps. We also thank them for their support. Their website is www.cilacfreire.mx and their email is cilacfreire@gmail.com. For now we will share spaces. WELCOME CILAC FREIRE AND A LONG LIFE TO CETLALIC Yours in solidarity: Jorge Torres, Martha Mata, Mario Garcìa, Francisco Ibarra, Roberto Palacios y Luz Vazquez Cuernavaca, Morelos, September 30, 2015

PSR Berkeley at CETLALIC Cuernavaca Mexico

Testimonies of our NEW pilot PROGRAM WITH PACIFIC SCHOOL OF RELIGION from Berkeley, CA. https://cuernavacaimmersion.wordpress.com/
19 de agosto “Our class includes five students. We are all at different levels. Some have lived in Spanish speaking countries and some have never spoken a word of Spanish. Yet, the instructor treats us as equals. Every voice is respected. We wait patiently as one of us struggles to speak. We encourage and assist each other, cheering one another on. Truly, this is what embodied grace looks like.” 18 de agosto “Yesterday we met with members of a base Christian community. These communities, grounded in liberation theology, believe in and work for political, economic, and religious change in the face of repressive/oppressive powers. They were so inspiring!” “Attended a meeting of a base Christian community where we studied Acts 2. So powerful to see a community committed to a radical Gospel of change in themselves, their community and the world no matter the risk. Note to self: stop playing it safe.” – Karen Oliveto 14 de agosto “Another amazing day of intercultural exchange on the CLGS ‪#‎psrimmersion‬ in Cuernavaca. This evening we met with Rev. Alfonso Leija of the Iglesia Apostolico who ministers to and with the LGBT community. Glad to have this tremendous opportunity to engage with our Mexican neighbors and colleagues.” — Justin Tanis 13 de agosto “Powerful testimony today at the Fundación Don Sergio Méndez Arceo, a human rights advocacy collective, about the oppression faced by activists and human rights defenders (we are joined here by the director). Then we met two wonderful members of a Christian Base Community here. Deeply faithful people committed to justice and equality.” — Justin Tanis ‪#‎psrimmersion‬

California-Mexico Higher Education Field Study Experience CHLS-490: Special Topics (3 units), Spring 2015 Spring break travel-study: Mexico City and Cuernavaca, Mexico (3/25-4/5/2015) Instructor: Armando Vazquez-Ramos, Email: armando.vazquez-ramos@csulb.edu
This travel-study course provided students with academic and field study exposure to the cultural lifestyle, educational system and social institutions of Mexico, while enhancing language skills through a 12-day full-immersion travel-study experience. The primary goal of the course was to develop a comprehensive understanding of educational policies, new California-Mexico collaboration agreements and the economic factors shaping the California-Mexico relationship. Goals of the course: The primary goal of the course will be to connect theory and practice for the student to develop a critical understanding of how historical, social, political, and economic forces affect U.S.-Mexico foreign policy, and its impact upon Latinos in the U.S.-- now the largest minority in the nation. The course will also examine contemporary issues related to the U.S. Chicano/Latino population, its interdependent relationship to their countries of origin in the Western Hemisphere, and familiarize the student with their contributions; and the important role that this population will have in the 21st century. Most importantly, the course will offer the student a 12-day study abroad experience that will include 60 hours of intensive classroom instruction (about 8 hours per day) on the above topics and a full-immersion learning experience of Spanish and Mexican Culture through the Tlahuica Center for Language and Cultural Exchange (CETLALIC) in Cuernavaca; homestay lodging and meals to enhance the “full-immersion” language skills development and living experience, and several evening and weekend excursions.
